This is cool. San Francisco is planning on installing 6,000 street sensors this fall that will be able to monitor parked cars and traffic flow. The info will be sent to Web maps, street signs, and smart phones, and is expected to alleviate some of the traffic mess generated by circling cars.

There is one week left until my San Francisco Half Marathon. That meant today was the last long run of my training - 12 miles.

Until today, the longest run I’d completed was about 11 miles. Today was important because I needed to reassure myself that I can do it and that I am not insane for wanting to do it.

It was a perfect morning for running… sunny, warm(ish), and little wind. T and I went through the park to the beach, a distance of three miles. Then, we made it back to the start and I headed out again for a second lap. T smartly chose to end it after the first go-round and headed home.

What did I learn from today’s run?
Well, I know that my body only gets sorta angry during and after running that far. Walking home I was only slightly shaky, which subsided after T fed me some juice, a banana, and some fabulous French toast. However, my physical appearance must have given me away since I had sweat so badly I looked as if I had walked through a rain forest. (Thanks Susan for the phrase.)

I also learned that during these long runs I must drink some water and eat something. I plan on taking a granola bar or two with me next week for the race. Lastly, I learned that I am not as fast as I thought I was. My last six miles were extremely slow and I passed only one person the entire time. Meanwhile, I was getting blazed by dozens of runners (you know, I think they were professional, they looked professional).

So what’s the verdict? I am still going to run. I still plan on running almost all, if not all of the race next week, and I will be very proud of myself for finishing, cuz it’s no picnic.
