December 2008

I started this blog in May of this year. I had no idea what to expect, but quickly became addicted to every aspect of running a blog. Aside from being an author/publisher, I am now also a photographer, graphic designer, web programmer, web shop owner, marketing manager, and advertising representative. (I use these terms loosely, however.)

Like the earlier post with some favorite photos, I’ve selected some past posts that I figured could be revisited.

A while ago I wrote about babies - making them, having them, and holding them. We had two couple-friends who were due and I am happy to report that both young ones were born healthy and hungry.

In that post, I discussed a certain friend of mine who was asking about our kid prospects. We had none, and still don’t, but that didn’t stop him from being so excited about babies and his (or his wife’s) little fetus in particular, that his excitement caused my computer to crash.

Sadly, the baby was not born a boy, and my hopes for a freshly minted ‘Ronald’ in this world were dashed. Instead they have a beautiful (takes after her mother) baby girl named Bridie (Bridget).

My friend is an ecstaticly proud father and I’ve had a few convos with him since the birthday on December 12th. The following is the most recent one, nearly verbatim:

Friend: I got barfed on last night, BIG TIME
me: oh no
i cant be around that
i’ll do it too
Friend: like more than a garden hose
me: ish
Friend: its different when its all milk
doesn’t smell bad
me: right
maybe since its your kid, it doesnt smell
kinda like how people enjoy the smell of their own odors
Friend: its true- diapers don’t stink either.
they say it starts smelling when you switch to formula- or go to real food
me: ahh ok
parameciums
Friend: exactrly
me: so did you take a picture of it?
Friend: no way- I was covered
me: haha mud football style
Friend: all over my chest and pants
me: ew
Friend: shot out like a cannon
me: how could one little critter produce that much
sounds like you overfilled
Friend: thats what I think
me: like a gas tank
never top off
they should tell you that at the hospital
or in the baby books
Friend: no kidding

This little episode is very telling about a lot of things.
1) Parents have unconditional love for their children
2) There is no way any baby book can tell you everything you need to know about babies
3) Once a parent, you apparently gain an increased threshold for grossness
and 4) My friends aren’t as quick-thinking as I would hope… gotta take a picture of that mess!

Well, 2008 is finally at its end. I’ve enjoyed writing for this blog and am excited to see what 2009 brings to my little blogosphere. I feel like I’ve had a rather evolutionary year in my personal life and am glad to have this forum to share with you readers.

Stay tuned for a recap of some of the favorite posts from this year, but for now, let us take a look at some of the best Purp photos of 2008…

Some of these photos are available in a 2009 wall calendar at the PurpAnd store.

While in Seattle, my sister and I palled around the entire week, except for the time she had to work on Friday. My choices were either stay home, without a car, or go with her to Bellevue and spend the day wandering. I chose the latter and I am glad I did.

She planned to work from 8 until about 4 so I had to find something to do to pass the time. I went armed with a book and after a quick trip to Starbucks, I walked over to the mall (it was next door) and sat in those wonderfully comfortable iron chairs outside the Tully’s (yes, still with my Starbucks cup) and ended up reading for two hours.

That was easy… half the morning gone already. The stores in the mall started opening up and I decided I would meander through some of my favs - Banana Republic, the Apple store, and Macy’s - and I even bought a few items.

It was 11 o’clock so I mosied myself back to my sister’s office building to wait for her and our lunch meeting at 11:30. We had a nice long lunch at a tasty Italian food restaurant (in her building) and then off she went back to work.

After lunch, I had a few more hours to kill, but luckily there was a movie theatre (also attached to her building… gotta love mixed-use) and I figured that would be a great way to pass a good chunk of time. I bought a ticket to The Day The Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves, (it was average) and when it was over, it was 3:30 and just about time to go. 8 hours passed, no sweat.

See, this type of day would have been dreadful for the old me. Before Friday, I had never been to a movie by myself, never been to a cafe just to sit/read by myself, and only on a few occasions had I ever gone shopping with no objective.

I must admit, I rather enjoyed the experience. After getting over the initial anxiety about whether or not people thought I was some lonely loser, it was nice just to have some ‘me’ time. In fact, it seems there were others having ‘me’ time that day as there were several people sitting solo in the theatre.

A day like last Friday turned out to be exactly what I needed… a day where I didn’t have to do anything at all. It’s been a long time since I had one of those days, and while I am typically opposed to the idea of not getting anything done, the whole day was pretty liberating. And in the process, I learned the difference between being solo and being alone.
