The San Francisco Marathon is coming up… one month from today actually, and I am feeling unprepared. After taking nearly four weeks off (due to my golf vacation and back nerve issue), I have run several times in the past week. The runs have been average, but I definitely show some regression from my training in May.
I know that during training, a runner should not press the workouts. It’s to avoid injury mostly, but I have an urge to do so because I want to make sure I can go the whole distance (I am doing just a half-marathon = 13.1 miles). It’s a mental thing… if I can run 11, 12, or even 13 miles in training, then I know I will be able to do it come race day.
I think my goal now for the next month is to slow my pace enough that I can run the longer runs without dying. At my current average pace of 8:20 minutes per mile, I can run 6+ miles, but after that, my body starts to yell at me.
My friends who signed up with me for this thing are starting to bow out. Which I can understand because who wants to run 13 miles at 6am on a Sunday in foggy San Francisco. But, I really hope that I don’t end up running this thing by myself. If that happens, I am going to force my friends to wait for me at the end to cheer me on as I hobble over the finish line. (Anyone see Run Fat Boy, Run?) And once across, I will wave my finger and say, “see, I told you it wouldn’t be that bad,” as I collapse and pass out on the grass.
